Pu Erh tea is derived from a special postfermentative process of the leaves of large-leaf species of Camellia sinensis. It is shown in various research studies that active components, catechins, are present in lower levels in Pu Erh tea.

Although Pu Erh tea contains lower amount of catcechins, it displayed higher antioxidant activity as compared to other type of teas. Its antioxidant functions are regulated through the mechanisms of nitric oxide suppression and hydroxyl radical scavenging.

Fermented Pu Erh tea is highly enriched with statins that help to lower cholesterol and lipid levels, and may aid in promoting weight loss.
