 iGATES is the world’s first online web-based system to track TCM herbs throughout the whole value chain. It streamlines, automates and integrates various world class quality and safety assurance processes throughout the entire TCM value chain – from “seed to shelf”. This ensures worldwide leading standards in food safety and traceability are maintained at all stages of growth, process and retail of TCM herbs.
iGates is owned by iGATES BioInnovation Pte Ltd (iGATES BioInnovation), a joint venture between Eu Yan Sang International and KOOPrime Pte Ltd(KOOPrime). This project is piloted by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore.Using state-of-the-art technologies, iGATES builds on KOOPrime’s BioEngine platform to integrate chemical and genomic fingerprinting into the system. This achieves a more robust authentication and identification of TCM herbs, right from their sources.
The system also allows users to streamline laboratory processes better, and creates an open communication platform between suppliers, distributors and TCM companies.
Because this system demonstrates creativity, innovation and enterprise, iGates was awarded The Enterprise Challenge (TEC) Fund of $262,000 in 2008. The fund recognizes initiatives by Singaporeans which could potentially create new value or significantly improve the delivery of public services.
iGATES will be an invaluable tool for global regulatory bodies because it sets higher standards and tighter regulatory controls for the TCM industry. The portal is also expandable to include either herbs or health supplements and even food items in the future.
iGates is expected to launch by 2009, and will assure consumers of the quality and safety of TCM herbs consumed.
