6 Ways to Heal Asthma Symptoms with Herbal Remedies

Asthma is a chronic non-communicable disease characterized by airway inflammation, which narrows the airways and makes it difficult to breathe. This leads to asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and even death. The exact cause is unknown but is typically related to genetics, the environment, and other triggers such as dander or food.

Asthma can be categorized as either allergic asthma or nonallergic asthma. Allergic asthma is caused by allergens, while nonallergic asthma is caused by triggers from the environment.

While asthma is not a curable disease, you can manage it by controlling symptoms and reducing the risk of future complications such as cardiovascular diseases or stroke.

Below, you'll learn more about asthma symptoms and how to alleviate them with herbal remedies.

What are Some Common Asthma Symptoms and Triggers?

Wheezing and tightness in the chest area are among the most common asthma symptoms.

An asthma attack occurs when you are exposed to triggers, which vary for every person. These can include dust mites, pollen, mold, pets, certain chemicals, smoke, pollution, and even pests like roaches.

From the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, asthma symptoms occur when phlegm blocks the vital force (qi) pathways. "This blockage prevents lung qi from descending, causing breathlessness. Chronic asthma is mostly due to kidney deficiencies. Therefore, during an asthma attack, the emphasis would be to remove the phlegm," explains TCM physician Lim Sock Ling.

Asthma symptoms can vary over time and in intensity, depending on the person. Common symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and may happen daily or occasionally.

Animal dander, pollen, roaches, mold, and dust

Keep your space clean from dust and always use a filtered mask when cleaning.

Pet dander from cats or dogs is one of the most common asthma triggers. If you have pets, wash them regularly, avoid touching them directly, and use an air purifier with a HEPA filter in common rooms.

Outdoor pollen exposure can also trigger asthma symptoms. Avoid areas with high pollen levels, especially in the mornings and evenings. If you must go outside, wear a pollen-filtering mask.

Cockroaches and mice dander or waste can increase the risk of allergic asthma. Keep food stored in sealed containers, garbage bins closed, and traps away from children.

Indoor mold, often found in damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms, can trigger attacks. Reduce mold by keeping areas dry, using a dehumidifier, and avoiding dust-collecting rugs.

Dust can also trigger symptoms. Wash bedding regularly, use HEPA-filter vacuums, and avoid down pillows and blankets.

Tobacco smoke

Tobacco smoke and secondhand smoke are harmful for everyone, especially those with asthma. Smoking can worsen lung function and reduce the effectiveness of medications like corticosteroids. Stay away from smoke exposure and avoid smoking.

Pollution and cleaning agents

Air pollution and certain cleaning agents can also trigger asthma. Choose cleaning products labeled as safe (like those in the EPA Safer Choice program) and avoid chemicals like bleach and ammonium. Ensure good airflow when cleaning by opening windows and wearing gloves and masks.

External factors

Rapid seasonal changes and cold weather can trigger attacks by disrupting lung qi circulation. Viruses like the flu or common cold can also exacerbate symptoms.

Herbal Remedies to Help With Asthma Symptoms

Soups made from tonifying herbs like reishi mushroom and Chinese licorice can help you breathe easier.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the importance of improving the diagnosis and treatment of asthma globally. Below are TCM herbal remedies that may help alleviate asthma symptoms.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo contains anti-inflammatory compounds that may relieve asthmatic coughs. Studies show ginkgo can reduce inflammation and airway constriction. Use ginkgo leaf extract cautiously, and avoid eating raw seeds.

Schisandra fruit

This berry supports lung health and helps relieve breathlessness. Schisandra is available in teas, powders, and capsules.

Turmeric

Turmeric reduces bronchial inflammation due to its compound curcumin. Combine with black pepper (piperine) to enhance its benefits.

ASHMI

This herbal formula contains lingzhi, Chinese licorice, and shrubby sophora. It reduces airway inflammation and improves immunity.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps supports lung and kidney health. It’s often prepared in soups or consumed in capsule form.

Lingzhi

Reishi mushrooms or lingzhi can improve blood circulation, relieve asthma, and reduce inflammation.

Lingzhi has immune-regulating and anti-inflammatory benefits. Cracked lingzhi spores are more nutrient-rich and absorbable.

Vasa

This Ayurvedic herb supports the respiratory system. Vasicine in Vasa helps treat coughs and bronchial conditions.

Consult a doctor before trying herbal remedies for asthma.
